The polka dot pattern first emerged around the same time as the Polish polka dance became popular. So because of this coincidence, many people believe that the name polka dot actually came from the name of the dance.
The first time that the pattern was called polka dot was in 1854 an edition of a Yale literary magazine. Though the Yale magazine printed the term polka dot first, it wasn’t until three years later in 1857 when the American women’s magazine called, Godey’s Lady’s Book, described a scarf which had polka dots on it. This time the term polka dot stuck.
As the polka dance became more popular in the 19th century so did the polka dots on clothing. Then when the polka dance became less popular, so did the polka dots.
Then there was a revival of the polka dot in the United States in 1926 when Miss America was seen wearing a polka dot swimsuit. Then throughout the 1930’s polka dot dresses were all throughout clothing stores.
The polka dot became so popular that Christian Dior made a line of clothing that was covered with polka dots near the end of the 1940s.
Marilyn Monroe made the polka dots even more popular in 1951 when she was photographed wearing a yellow polka dot bikini. Marilyn Monroe enjoyed the polka dot, she was pictured in many other fun, polka dot dresses and bikinis.
In 1962, DC Comics unveiled a new villian for Batman, whose name was Polka Dot Man. Polka Dot Man could create weapons by pulling off a polka dot and pushing a button. This character shows just how crazy people had become about the polka dot, that a major comic series was created because of the polka dot.
